Heuksando Pasi

An archival documentary that restores the memory of the pasi, the itinerant sea market that once flourished off Heuksando, a small island at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula.

In the 1970s, more than 2,000 fishing boats anchored off Heuksando every day and tens of thousands of people flocked to the spectacle. Formed along the migration routes of yellow croaker, brown croaker and Spanish mackerel, the market was a vast floating community where not only fish but liquor, groceries, fishing gear and fuel changed hands. Yet with changing technology, depleted resources, an aging fishing population and the climate crisis, the pasi vanished from both the map and memory. This film records its last traces at Heuksando, the very heart of the pasi.

Heuksando Pasi is more than a record of one era's fish market. Through the universal story of a coastal community, of those who leave, the harbor left behind and the elders who remember, it speaks of the loss of Korea's seas and of the world's maritime cultures alike. It expands a local, historical subject into a global conversation about the climate crisis and the breakdown of community.
