Synopsis
Tongyeong, a port city on Korea's southern coast, was home to two composers: Isang Yun and Jeong Yoon-joo. Pushed by his family into civil engineering, Jeong drew blueprints by day and studied music by night. He completed his first work, String Quartet No. 1, in 1950 amid the Korean War, followed by the dance suite The Death of a Magpie. He went on to score more than 300 films. At the same time he explored ways to unite Korean traditional instruments with the Western orchestra, as in his Gayageum Concerto on a Theme by Hwang Byung-ki. In his hometown he organized the Hallyeo Invitational Concerts for some twenty years. Through the recollections of his daughter Jeong Gyu-sun, the testimony of scholar Park Woo-gwon, and the photographs and belongings he left behind, the film retraces the life of a long-overlooked composer.
